A couple living in Kaitāia are leaving for Slovakia next week to help convert two barns into shelters for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.
The Shelter For Ukraine initiative worked to transform barns into temporary housing.

Worksafe moves on Law Firms following Russel Mcveagh Saga
Barrister Sam Moore says this is a new focus, not just for WorkSafe but also other health and safety regulators around the world, as office environments are not typically a focus.
“WorkSafe is a relatively young regulator. It hasn’t been around in its current form for very long but the first piece of guidance issued was in relation to bullying so, while it hasn’t happened before, the writing has been on the wall.”
Mr Moore, who is an adjunct lecturer at AUT University in health and safety, says, in theory, WorkSafe could prosecute Russell McVeagh under current law.
“If you were to accept the content of the Bazley report, in my view, there’s sufficient information that harm has in fact occurred and that Russell McVeagh failed to take all reasonable and practicable steps [to prevent harm].”
“But that’s a value judgment a regulator has to make.”
In terms of the law firms, Mr Moore says it was open for WorkSafe to do more against them “but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was no more than a meeting.”

Slovak Barns that once housed Nazi will welcome Ukrainians after urgent repairs.
On the outskirts of the small Slovak village of Nemcinany, two crumbling barns that once housed Nazi soldiers have become the focus of a multinational effort to provide a haven for Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion.
The barns, 250 miles from the Ukrainian border, have lain derelict for decades, scarred with bullet holes from what villagers say was a desperate stand by Nazi occupiers in the dying days of World War II.
Now, a group of New Zealanders who had hoped to transform the site into a school are preparing urgent repairs to remake the buildings into safe houses. They are among many people around the world who are mounting makeshift efforts to help Ukraine, from veterans volunteering as foreign fighters to rail operators ferrying refugees into Central Europe.
